Fresh Feta and Parsley Dressing

A food styler I am not.

I’m sure I could be; I mean I’m sure I could try harder, and practice more, and spend more time on that end of this blog. But I’ve had to prioritize. Having a full time job, and a part time photography business, and this piece of the web here that is such a joy for me…well it just makes for full evenings and busy weekends and very little down time. And that’s totally my choice…I’m not complaining.

But for the longest time I considered giving up this blog to focus more on my photography business. I realized though that this was such an important creative outlet for me; one that combined my loves of food, family, and photography into one online journal. So I made the concious decision to keep it, but with parameters. I told myself I would only focus on the things that I really felt fit with the vision of my blog, which is providing yummy, family friendly recipes and easy to do activities with kiddos….basically sharing the things that comprise our daily life.

I love all your salad dressings! As does the other person who lives with me, and he can sometimes be pretty finicky!

Warm Chickpea and Shallot Salad

I’m a sucker for seasonal eating.

Warm Chickpea and Shallot Salad | Sugar and Grace

Not as in choosing my fruits and vegetables based on what is in season…I’m not that cool.

But as in, I want my food to be warm and cozy right now.

This time of year is for soups and chilis and apple cider. For pumpkin and pecans and molasses. But it leaves the salad loving part of me in quite a pickle. If you didn’t know, I love a good salad, and not just one with a lettuce base. Cucumber salad, farro salad, tabouleh, pasta salad….I really havent met a salad I don’t like. But right now, a cold, chopped salad is just not cutting it.

So lets take some simple, flavorful ingredients, warm ’em up and mix ’em up and call it a winter salad, yes?

Mini Pizzas

Hey, anyone busy out there?

Not at this time of year, right?

I dream of a time when November and December are just spent at home. Surrounded by family. With snow falling.

I know that’s not entirely realistic, but I can dream. Because the constant state of GO that is these months drives me a little batty. I love these months; I love the focus on family, and giving, and gratitude. The good cheer and the rejoicing. But it all goes by so fast, and with so much crammed into the days.

It’s all good stuff…don’t get me wrong.

baking

church activities

parties

travel

family get-togethers

shopping for those we love

finding ways to express gratitude

But it’s overwhelming, and requires some prioritization.

So when you want to focus more on your family and less on dinner prep, I get you. And I urge you to make these. Because not only will your entire family love them, but they are relatively healthy and you can involve your kids in the process. An easy, much-loved meal + quality time with your most important priorities!

Chocolate Almond Oat Bites

This kind of blew my mind.

I LIKE A HEALTHY DESSERT.

My best friend, Jennifer; she has an awesome health coaching business/food blog that is focused on healthy/clean/often gluten-free eating. And I make fun of her sometimes. Like, “how can juice really be your lunch??” And, “how many more things can you possibly put spinach into?!” And, “that is NOT dessert.”

So yea, compared to her, I am not the picture of healthy eating habits. But I do try to eat and cook healthy, preparing lots of fruits vegetables, and eating minimal processed food. That’s kind of easy though. It’s really not too hard to eat healthy meals. I could eat brussels sprouts for dayyyys, and salads are one of my most favorite meals…texture and flavor galore!

But desserts…humph. Is a healthy dessert really a dessert?

These look so cute and yummy! Thanks for the recipe. Your little one has a sweet smile. My little guy bites his nails at bedtime too I think. I don’t see him doing it in the daytime, but never have to trim his nails!

They are yummy! And so easy. Glad to know he’s not the only one. Its true-I never have to trim his nails either, but gosh I don’t know how to get him to stop!

Smothered Pork Chops

The burden of being an adult has really caught up to me this month.

I know…I know I know I know I know, that these kinds of things happen to everyone, and that my issues are minor compared with the real problems in the world. But dang, it sure is hard to not want to go into the bedroom with cookies and a book and not come out for a few days.

Busted pipes and leaky roofs and broken HVAC units have all poured their wrath on me this month. Rising insurance costs and medical bills and crappy benefits have crawled their way under my skin and made me want to scream.

But, I have benefits. I have a job. I have a home. And I have pork chops.

Due to the aforementioned maladies, our fridge, freezer, and pantry were all looking a little bare this month. It was one of those times where you end up feeling ridiculously proud of yourself for managing to make a meal out of turkey pepperoni, string cheese, and baseball shaped pasta. Then, out of nowhere, a gigantic box of food shows up on our doorstep from Omaha Steaks, an incredibly poignant and well timed gift from family.  Though we were by no means starving, it was still so nice to know we had all the fixings at our fingertips for a healthy, well rounded meal after late night t-ball games.
